STEAM fields are the areas of science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics. STEAM is designed to integrate STEM subjects with arts subjects into various relevant education disciplines.
Minorities continue to face challenges in pursuing STEM careers due to a lack of access to resources and institutional biases. Early education programs often fail to expose them to technology career paths or inspire a love for technology. The researchers found that about 13% to 16% of white students versus 3% to 4% of Black or Hispanic students displayed advanced science or math achievement during kindergarten. At the end of fifth grade, about 13% of white students and 22% of Asian students displayed advanced mathematics achievement. The contrasting percentages were 2% and 3% for Black and Hispanic students, respectively.
